Game 3 awaits in the NBA Finals, with Heat loose and Nuggets facing adversity

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 12:26:45 GMT

MIAMI (AP) — Erik Spoelstra has preached about the value of adversity for months, not shying away from saying that it helped the Miami Heat get to these NBA Finals. And now Denver is dealing with a little taste of it as well.Game 3 of the NBA Finals is Wednesday night in Miami, the series between the eighth-seeded Heat and top-seeded Nuggets knotted at a game apiece. It got that way after Miami rallied to win Game 2 in Denver 111-108 on Sunday night, an outcome that prompted Nuggets coach Michael Malone to openly share frustrations — primarily over a lack of discipline on a lot of possessions.“We had a really good film session this morning,” Malone said Tuesday. “I gave an opportunity for everybody on our team to speak and talk about what they saw on the film. It was a very honest conversation. Guys owned what they needed to own. We have to learn from Game 2 to use it to our advantage.”In other words, Denver needs to do what Miami did coming out of Game 1.The Heat faced significant d...

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Juventus plans to leave the Super League project still being pursued by Real Madrid and Barcelona, though the club denied Tuesday it had been threatened with a European ban by UEFA.The three storied clubs are awaiting a ruling expected within weeks from the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg into their legal challenge against what they claimed is UEFA’s monopoly control of European club competitions. But Juventus responded to reports it already left the Super League by explaining it contacted the two Spanish clubs “to initiate a discussion period” about its exit. The three clubs were holdouts after the other nine Italian, Spanish and English clubs who joined them to launch the breakaway Super League in April 2021 renounced it within weeks of its quick failure.UEFA was a clear winner when the Luxembourg court gave a first, non-binding opinion in the Super League case in December that went against the clubs. It has been a tough season for Juventus’ owners, player...

Novak Djokovic perfect in key tiebreaker, nearly perfect in next set of French Open win

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 12:26:45 GMT

PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic, in his words, felt “quite sluggish, quite slow” for nearly two full sets against Karen Khachanov in the the French Open quarterfinals Tuesday. Afterward, Djokovic called it his worst stretch of the tournament, a fair assessment. He dropped the opening set, something he hadn’t done at Roland Garros this year. As the second went to a tiebreaker in Court Philippe Chatrier, he knew it was vital to step up his game, bring forth his best. It’s one thing to seek perfection; it’s another entirely to deliver. As if merely wanting so made it so, Djokovic did what he’s done before at crucial moments over the years en route to 22 Grand Slam titles. Managing to choose the right shot every time, managing to put each ball precisely where he intended, Djokovic threw a shutout of a tiebreaker to point himself toward what would become a 4-6, 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Khachanov.Djokovic, who could meet No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in th...

Erik Spoelstra proving his worth as coach — again — as Heat head home in great shape in NBA Finals

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 12:26:45 GMT

In the end, it’s coaching that matters most.Coaching — that is, Erik Spoelstra — is the reason the Miami Heat return to South Beach tied with the Denver Nuggets at one game apiece in the NBA Finals with Game 3 looming Wednesday night. The Heat trailed by as many as 24 before losing Game 1 by 11 in Denver, but thanks to some tactical adjustments made by Spoelstra, Miami stunned the Nuggets to steal home-court advantage in Game 2. Namely, the Heat forced two-time MVP Nikola Jokic into increasing his scoring load by taking away his passing options. Jokic finished with only four assists to his 41 points, and Denver’s four key three-point shooters combined to shoot just 6-of-20 from downtown.Spoelstra also changed defensive assignments, putting All-Star wing Jimmy Butler on Denver’s lead guard Jamal Murray after Murray erupted for 26 points in Game 1.Murray shot just 7-of-15 from the field in Game 2.“[Denver] is a really good offensive team,” Spoe...
