Almost exactly a year before the plane crash that killed mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, local police in D.C. were called to investigate the case of another former Moscow businessperson who also fell from the sky.Twelve months later, the plunge from an M Street apartment building of Dan Rapoport, a Soviet-born U.S. citizen who made a mint in post-communist Russia before souring on the regime, remains unexplained.Tellingly, it’s been largely forgotten in Washington.Though international media gave the story a lot of ink, the city had paid little attention — even though it involved a ghastly local death of a man who once moved in elite circles and owned the house that later became the Kalorama residence of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Now, with the Prigozhin crash focusing new attention on murky Kremlin-adjacent deaths, some allies of Rapoport are speaking up about their unhappiness with Washington’s investigation of his demise, something city police almost immediately said likely...Triston Casas’ homer, Alex Verdugo’s 3 hits lead the Red Sox to a 9-5 win over the Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Triston Casas hit a two-run homer and Alex Verdugo finished a homer short of hitting for the cycle as the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-5 on Saturday night.Six Boston batters drove in a run and all but one Red Sox starter had a hit. Boston snapped a five-game skid with the win after allowing four runs for the 12th time in 13 games.Tanner Houck (4-8) worked five innings and allowed four runs and seven hits while walking one and striking out five.Royals starter Alec March (0-8) was knocked out of the game early after allowing six runs on seven hits. On June 13, Alex Cora shut down the idea of sending a struggling Triston Casas down to Triple-A Worcester to hone his craft. The 23-year-old rookie first baseman came into that day hitting .197 with a .683 OPS and 36 hits through his first 59 games. He entered Saturday, hitting .323 with a 1.008 OPS in 61 games since. On Saturday night in Kansas City, he went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, two RBI, and a walk, helping the Red Sox snap their five-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory. The win was also Cora’s 432nd, tying predecessor John Farrell for sixth-most in franchise history.“At least for today, that was a good one,” the Red Sox manager told reporters.Scoring early and often was a welcome change after a long week full of staring up at early, steep deficits. Alex Verdugo led off the contest with a triple and scored on Rafael Devers’ double, putting the Red Sox on the board 1-0 immediately and setting the stage for the rookie first baseman to come through with another big hit.Ca...DJ Stewart, Mets fight back but fall short as JP Crawford, Mariners even series

The Mets fought back every step of the way on Saturday but couldn’t get over the hump. The AL West-leading Mariners’ offense proved to be too much to handle as the Amazins would fall 8-7 in the second of a three-game set.JP Crawford’s go-ahead solo homer in the top of the ninth off of Adam Ottavino proved to be the difference after the Mets erased two separate three-run deficits to no avail.DJ Stewart erased the first three-run deficit as his legend continues to grow late in this season. Stewart launched a three-run homer to dead center off of Mariners’ ace Luis Castillo in the bottom of the fourth with the Mets trailing 3-0.The 29-year-old’s season OPS is up to 1.010 in 38 games this season. Stewart has capitulated his way into conversations regarding the Mets’ future with his strong brief season.Castillo was roughed up a bit by Buck Showalter’s lineup. The right-hander tossed five innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out...Oswald Peraza, Yankees’ youngsters fuel offense in win over Astros to secure series victory

The New England Revolution gave up the tying goal in the final minute of stoppage time in an inexplicable 2-2 draw with Austin FC on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.Austin midfielder Alex Ring scored his first of the season in the fourth minute of stoppage time that nullified a phenomenal effort by Revs forward Tomas Chancalay, who scored two goals in his second MLS start. The Revolution (13-5-8) extended their record home unbeaten streak to 10-0-4 on a bad note. The Revolution went 1-1-1 in three games in eight days and will play the next three on the road beginning with Minnesota United FC on Sept. 9.Interim head coach Richie Williams (1-1-1) made his third straight MLS start as field manager in place of Bruce Arena, who remains on indefinite administrative leave pending an investigation by MLS for making “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”“We should have gotten three points and at the end of the game we didn’t manage the game,” said Williams. “All we had to do was dribble ...Police evacuate North York church after bomb threat
