SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies started their season the right way, winning three of their first four games, including Tuesday night's Opening Day game.“I love it over here because no matter where you are, you are 25 feet from the field,” said James Schratz, a Grizzlies fan. It’s been 10 seasons since the Grizzlies last made it to the playoffs. Second-year manager Steve Brook is trying to change that. Brook came from the Grizzlies' rival River City Rascals, where he managed and played.“When you compete hard against a team, they become a rival,” Brook said. “You then come to that team; it's kind of a little different story.” Illinois girl abducted at 9 found safe 6 years later in North Carolina; mom charged One of the players trying to get the team back to winning ways is one of the new faces for the Grizzlies, but he’s no stranger to the St. Louis area. Anthony Davis stared. Nikola Jokic shrugged.Jokic’s jaw-dropping 3-pointer to close the third quarter served as the capstone moment of Tuesday’s riveting Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. The Nuggets’ 132-126 win over the Lakers staked Denver to a 1-0 series lead after Los Angeles cut a 21-point deficit to just three on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter.Ball Arena held its collective breath and only exhaled when LeBron James turned it over with 18 seconds left in regulation, all but securing the victory. The Nuggets survived despite a porous second-half defense that gave up 72 points. Davis finished with 40 points, while James added 26 points and 12 rebounds. Initial observations from the Denver Nuggets’ thrilling win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the 2023 Western Conference Finals.1. Lakers will break like glass if they’re this bad on the glass. Insistent on making excuses for the Lakers, the ESPN broadcast crooned throughout the first half about how the altitude must be getting to Los Angeles. Or maybe consider this: The Nuggets are the better team, the faster team and certainly the advantageous team when they’re controlling the glass. They started the series with a 19-3 rebounding lead that stretched to 37-17 by halftime. Nikola Jokic alone had 11 boards just past eight minutes into Game 1, putting him well on his way to a fourth triple-double in the last five games. The effect? A 16-8 Denver lead in second-chance points and a 17-6 lead in fast break points at halftime. Nuggets coach Michael Malone said during the second round his team is at its best when running in transition. By TIM REYNOLDS (AP Basketball Writer)Ja Morant spoke out Tuesday night about his latest troubles, three days after the Memphis guard apparently held a firearm again while being broadcast on social media and was suspended by the Grizzlies from all team activities. He’s also being investigated by the NBA for his actions, two months after the league suspended him for essentially the same thing — displaying a gun on social media.“I know I’ve disappointed a lot of people who have supported me,” Morant said in a statement released Tuesday night by his representatives. “This is a journey and I recognize there is more work to do. My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I’m committed to continuing to work on myself.”His comments came a few hours after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed disappointment over the situation.
