WASHINGTON (AP) — A Navy investigation prompted by a spate of suicides is recommending widespread improvements in housing, food, parking and internet for sailors as well as changes to mental health and other personnel programs. The much-anticipated report lays out a sweeping condemnation of living and working conditions at naval shipyards that had languished for years but were brought to light by the deaths.“We let our people down.” Navy leaders said in response to the findings. The inquiry concluded that several suicides at the Newport News shipyard in Virginia last year were not connected or caused by any one issue. But the deaths underscored pervasive problems and poor living conditions, particularly among young enlisted sailors doing long-term ship maintenance at that base and others around the United States.“The focus on the maintenance mission has degraded our ability to take care of our most junior and at-risk sailors,” said the investigating officer, Rear Adm. After 2 great games, a first escapes the White Sox Thursday

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:40:57 GMT

CHICAGO — The previous two games featured some of the more encouraging play for the club, especially offensively, during a frustrating opening two months of the 2023 season. But for the second time this month against a division opponent, the White Sox couldn't get a much-needed first in this campaign. After two strong offensive performances against the Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field, the host's bats were quieted by Cleveland pitching. While they were able to manage eight hits, they only pushed one run across in a 3-1 defeat Thursday afternoon. Pedro Grifol's team missed the chance for their first sweep of the 2023 season, doing so at home for the second time in a month. Earlier in May, the White Sox took two against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field only to lose in the series finale to Minnesota 7-3 in 12 innings on May 4.Dylan Cease did what he could to keep the White Sox in the game but the Guardians finally got to him in the seventh. Supreme Court hands Twitter, Google wins in internet liability cases

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:40:57 GMT

The Supreme Court on Thursday punted the issue of determining when internet companies are protected under a controversial liability shield, instead resolving the case on other grounds. The justices were considering two lawsuits in which families of terrorist attack victims said Google and Twitter should be held liable for aiding and abetting ISIS, leading to their relatives' deaths. Google asserted that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, enacted in 1996 to prevent internet companies from being held liable for content posted by third parties, protected the company from all of the claims. But rather than wading into the weighty Section 230 dispute — which internet companies say allows them to serve users and offers protection from a deluge of litigation — the court Thursday found neither company had any underlying liability to need the protections. In the Twitter case, conservative Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for a unanimous court that the plaintiffs’ allegations fell “far ...

Austin City Council: 'Safe Place' program, south Austin development move forward

'Safe Place' program expansion: ApprovedCouncil Member José Velásquez introduced a resolution that would enroll all city recreation centers and public libraries in the Austin Police Department's 'Safe Place' program and require training of staff at those locations. Austin City Council voted to approve the program expansion Thursday morning. The 'Safe Place' program was first created in Seattle as an attempt to combat the lack of reporting of anti-LGBTQ+ crimes. It has since expanded to the reporting of all bias crimes. "Businesses that participate place an easily recognizable decal at their entrances. This symbol is a signal for victims of hate crimes and bias incidents that this location has partnered with the police, will call 911 on their behalf and allow them a safe place stay to on the premises until the police arrive," the Austin Police Departme...

Athletic, youthful Lynx are ready to ‘turn some heads’ this season

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:40:57 GMT

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve has a different perspective entering this WNBA season, which opens Friday for Minnesota at home against Chicago. After years of chasing championships and playoff appearances, Reeve’s sights are centered now on progress. That is an approach befitting a coach and president of basketball operations, who is entering a new era with a talented, but young roster.“Looking at it that way, I’m less focused on the outcomes that people focus on — the wins and losses. And we don’t want to do that to this team. I think what we’re super locked in on is how do we immerse ourselves as coaches into their preparation, their improvement. And that’s what we’re going to base (success) on.”That seems to suggest Reeve doesn’t expect to contend for anything of consequence this season. And that seems to fall in line with what national prognosticators are predicting for this Lynx team. Outlets consistently slot Minnesota somewhere in the No. 7-10 range out of the league’s 12 teams. After trying year, Twins’ Joey Gallo responds well in new environment

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:40:57 GMT

LOS ANGELES — Joey Gallo’s stay in Southern California last season was brief, so the list of highlights and achievements is short. Griffin Jax reminds him of one of those highlights — an opposite-field three-run home that he hit off the reliever — from time to time.“Probably one of the best moments in a short-lived Dodger career was against the Twins,” Gallo said. “It was pretty fun.”That short stint in Los Angeles provided Gallo a lifeline out of New York, a place where he admits “mentally, it was tough” for him. For that, Gallo said he was “really appreciative.” The slugger returned to Dodger Stadium, a place he called home for just a few months, this week in a much different — and better — place than when he arrived last August via trade.Given an offseason to reset, the version of Gallo the Twins have seen has been everything they could have hoped for when they signed him to a one-year free-agent deal. The outfielder/first baseman, who fouled a ball off his right shin on Wednesda...

NYS eyes SUNY campuses to house migrants

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)--With more migrants expected to come to New York, questions on where to house them remain. One option could be SUNY Campuses. New York City currently has more 41,000 asylum seekers with about 15 more buses of migrants on their way. With New York City at capacity, Governor Hochul’s team is now searching for all available state properties for housing. In an interview with NY1 on Wednesday she said, "Clearly a SUNY campus lends itself to immediate help, but long-term, we have to have it free by August. So, what happens in August? So these are the questions we're asking right now. We are looking at every possible property in the State of New York to help have a relief valve for the City of New York."SUNY stated, "At Governor Hochul’s direction, we are assessing whether there are SUNY resources available to help with the arrival of asylum seekers."“First of all, I think it’s a big mistake. It’s very disturbing," said Republican Assemblyman Chris Tauge. “This whole pr...
