Lincoln County prosecutor pushes to bring Pam Hupp trial closer to St. Louis area

LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. - Prosecutors want the high-profile Pam Hupp murder trial moved back closer to the St. Louis area. The Lincoln County Prosecutor’s Office has just announced their plans to ask a judge for the move. It comes after a defense request for a change of venue sent the trial more than 200 miles away to the Springfield, Missouri, area.Lincoln County Prosecutor Mike Wood wrote in a news release, “I agree that a change of venue from Lincoln County – the scene of the crimes – is still appropriate. However, as my office has continued its in-depth planning to conduct what we estimate will be a month-long trial, it is more and more apparent that the physical distance between the scene of the crimes and green county will cause cumbersome and inefficient delivery of justice.” Pam Hupp is currently serving a life sentence for the 2016 murder of Louis Gumpenberger. Her current charges and pending trial involve the 2011 Betsy Faria murder, which occurred just outside of Troy, Missou...Missouri schools to test drinking water for lead

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - This school year, school districts all around the state of Missouri are testing for lead in drinking water in compliance with a new law. Before Jan. 1, all schools are required to create a testing plan. Then, under law, schools have until next August to test all drinking water for lead. With Missouri being a leading lead-producing state, there are concerns about what the results will show. "There's no known safe level of lead in the body," said Melissa May, health drinking water unit chief in the bureau of epidemiology at the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). "We are doing our best to help schools reduce lead in drinking water because we do know the adverse health effects of lead in our drinking water, and we are committed to keeping our children safe in Missouri." The owner of Oakland’s once-buzzy Hi Felicia has gone from Michelin aspirations last year to shutting down the restaurant in May and now, as of this week, having the business owe more than $100,000 to former employees.Hi Felicia violated Oakland’s minimum-wage laws and must pay $105,555 to more than a dozen former workers, according to a notice the city sent on Wednesday to owner Imana (who is known by just one name) that was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. That amount in restitution checks is due in just over 40 days. The city asserts that Hi Felicia’s service-charge policy did not “comport with the requirements of Measure FF,” an Oakland-specific directive that states that hospitality employers who collect service charges from customers must pay that money in full to the workers who performed the services.Hi Felicia instead gave 10 percent of service charges to employees and used the rest to supplement higher hourly wages for its employee...Here are special foods and deals at restaurants for Halloween 2023

Injured center Mikael Granlund could return as soon as Sunday when the San Jose Sharks play the Washington Capitals to finish their five-game road trip, coach David Quinn said.Granlund, who has dealt with a lower-body injury and hasn’t played since the Sharks’ Oct. 12 season-opener, had what was described as a minor setback earlier this week as he was preparing to play the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. But Granlund has felt better of late due to what Quinn said was a “different approach to his treatments.”“And they’ve worked very well,” Quinn said Friday before the Sharks played the Carolina Hurricanes. If the Sharks do activate Granlund off injured reserve before Sunday’s game, they’ll have to make a corresponding move since they are already at the 23-man roster limit.Still, the Sharks will take any type of encouraging news they can get right now, and Granlund’s return could help slot other forwards into more ideal positions.Off to the slowest start in franchise history wi...Using opioid settlement cash for police gear like squad cars and scanners sparks debate

And in other communities around the country, hundreds of thousands for vehicles, body scanners and other equipment. In these cases and many others, state and local governments are turning to a new means to pay those bills: opioid settlement cash. This money — totaling more than $50 billion across 18 years — comes from national settlements with more than a dozen companies that made, sold or distributed opioid painkillers, including Johnson & Johnson, AmerisourceBergen, and Walmart, which were accused of fueling the epidemic that addicted and killed millions.Directing the funds to police has triggered difficult questions about what the money was meant for and whether such spending truly...Latest news
