Juneteenth celebrations are in full swing across Los Angeles County as Black Americans and others celebrate the newest federal holiday.June 19 marks the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free from Union soldiers. The historical event occurred in Galveston, Texas. President Biden signed bipartisan legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021.Here is a roundup of the Juneteenth celebrations taking place across Los Angeles.The Leimert Village Juneteenth Festival will be held at Leimert Park Village until 9 p.m. Monday. Musicians such as Jasmine Sullivan, Too Short and Wale will perform during the event. Two-Vehicle Crash Near Constellation Road Left Three FatalitiesLOMPOC, CA (June 19, 2023) – Early Tuesday, a head-on crash on Highway 1 killed Zeferino Chavez Martinez, Adelina Cortez Olea, and Rosalva Chavez Cortez.The fatal collision happened shortly before 6:00 a.m. along northbound Highway 1, just south of Constellation Road.According to California Highway Patrol, a southbound 2008 Kia sedan drove onto the oncoming lanes of Highway 1 for unknown reasons. Consequently, the Kia crashed head-on with a Chevrolet pickup traveling northbound.Responding emergency personnel declared the three occupants of the Kia dead at the scene.Meanwhile, paramedics rushed the two occupants of the pickup to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. 76-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Semi-Truck Accident near Jayne AvenueFRESNO COUNTY, CA (June 19, 2023) – Late Monday night, Geoffrey Balzer was fatally struck in a big-rig collision on Interstate 5.The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m., just north of Jayne Avenue on June 5th.Per reports, 76-year-old Balzer exited his vehicle and was standing on the right shoulder of the roadway. There, 31-year-old Fernando Flores-Roman who was driving a Peterbilt truck failed to see Balzer and struck him.Upon impact, Balzer suffered life-threatening injuries. Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Santa Ana AvenueRIALTO, CA (June 19, 2023) – Police arrested Roberto Mojo-Sanchez following a hit-and-run collision on South Riverside Avenue Monday night.The fatal crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. at the 2500 block of S. Riverside Avenue and Santa Ana Avenue.Based on the initial investigation, a northbound vehicle in the no. 1 lane of Riverside Avenue hit the pedestrian walking in the traffic lanes. However, the driver did not stop to render aid and continued driving.Additionally, investigators believed that several other vehicles hit the victim that was left lying in the roadway. The death and injuries were reported by officials in eastern Mississippi’s Jasper County.The small, rural town of Louin bore the brunt of the damage. Drone footage and photos showed wide expanses of debris-covered terrain, decimated homes and mangled trees. At least one person was lifted from the wreckage in a stretcher.Most of the people injured in Jasper County, including the person who died, were transported to the South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel between 2 and 3 a.m., said Becky Collins, a spokeswoman for the facility. Ralph Woodson’s Purple Haze is not your typical tribute band. Woodson has studied his idol Jimi Hendrix to the point of being able to play the guitar behind his back and with his teeth. Woodson is a Hendrix authority, and that knowledge was on display June 16 at the kickoff of Milpitas’ Summer Concert Series at Sunnyhills Albert Augustine Jr. Memorial Park.The band’s set brought back memories for those in the crowd who grew up with Hendrix’s music. “I had a band in high school, and I played these songs,” said Henry Nichols, who graduated from Samuel Ayer High School in Milpitas in 1968.The free summer concert series rolls on through early August. (CNN) — The US Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation Monday for a submarine that went missing during an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic, CNN partner CTV News reported.The group conducting the trip, Oceangate Expeditions, said it is “exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.”“Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families. We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible,” the group said. “We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.”The submersible holds up to five people, the company says on its website. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Six people were injured Sunday evening after a shooting near Pier 39, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) confirmed to KRON4. Police have since detained two people in connection to the shooting. Dolores Heights business faces 2 break-ins in 2 days The shooting was first reported around 6:48 p.m. near Beach and Stockton streets, not far from Pier 39. SFPD says two vehicles were chasing each other down The Embarcadero. The rolling gun battle between two shooters ultimately ended near Howard Street.
