USS Carney shoots down drones, responds to ballistic missile attack on commercial vessel (CNN) — The USS Carney shot down at least three Houthi drones headed in the ship’s direction in the southern Red Sea on Sunday and responded to a distress call from a civilian commercial vessel that was fired upon by a ballistic missile, a US defense official said. The drones were part of four attacks against three separate commercial vessels launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, US Central Command said in a statement Sunday evening. It’s unclear whether the USS Carney was a target of the drones. At roughly 9:15 a.m. local time, the Carney “detected an anti-ship ballistic missile attack fired from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen toward the M/V Unity Explorer,” US Central Command said. The missile landed in the ship’s vicinity; the Carney — an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer deployed as part of the USS Gerald R. Bailey Zappe can’t provide Patriots with spark; new QB gets blanked by Chargers FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The Patriots were hoping for a spark courtesy of Bailey Zappe.Instead, the list of dreadful performances from New England’s quarterbacks added another tale of woe in miserable weather conditions on Sunday. The quarterback switch that’s been a topic de jour in recent weeks saw the Patriots produce more of the same with Zappe’s final stat line in a 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers resembling the numbers that led to coach Bill Belichick pivoting away from Mac Jones. In his first start of the season and third of his career, Zappe averaged 5.7 yards per pass attempt with his longest completion going for 27 yards. His quarterback rating was a substandard 68.9 and he also was sacked five times.“It starts with me. I’ve got to make the ball catchable, especially in conditions like (the ones that hovered over Gillette Stadium on Sunday),” Zappe said.In a game that saw Zappe unable to lead New England to the red zone and the Patriots failing to produce a touchdown fo...

Callahan: How much worse can the Patriots get?

Callahan: How much worse can the Patriots get? FOXBORO — Rhamondre Stevenson gimped off the field with 4:25 left in the first quarter Sunday, anguished by a fresh ankle injury that caused him to fumble and could soon cause him to miss games.Lucky him.Stevenson missed the rest of another miserable loss, another D-minus offensive performance, another is-this-rock-bottom moment for the Patriots.Somehow, we’re still asking, and they’re still sinking.Bailey Zappe, of course, was no savior. He completed 13 passes over 11 scoreless drives in the 6-0 loss, his first start of the season. Not that Zappe had much help.Until late in the third quarter, Stevenson still led all Patriots in all-purpose yards. Meanwhile, Tyquan Thornton dropped a pinpoint deep ball, DeVante Parker stepped out of bounds on another bomb, Ezekiel Elliott fumbled and JuJu Smith-Schuster finished with one catch for the fourth time this season.Credit to them for fighting through a miserably cold rain Sunday. But all credit stops there. How do Bill Bel...

Boston City Council looks to ban the sale of guinea pigs at pet shops With guinea pigs reportedly being surrendered more than ever, the Boston City Council is looking to do all it can to ensure the small critters are receiving the best care possible. That’s the focus behind a proposed ordinance in front of council that looks to ban the sale of guinea pigs in pet shops across the city. The council’s Committee on Government Operations is set to hear feedback from animal welfare leaders and advocates on Monday regarding the proposal, filed by Councilor Liz Breadon this past March.City officials enacted a “pet shop” ordinance in 2016, prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits, except in cooperation with an animal shelter or rescue organization. It left out guinea pigs, a “significant share” of which come from large-scale, out-of-state commercial breeding facilities and brokers,” according to the proposed ordinance.A dozen other cities and towns followed Boston’s initial ordinance, including Cambridge and Attleboro, cities that went further by including...

MassGOP chair calls for return to formal sessions, defends delay tactics Democratic lawmakers must return to formal session and put their name on the record for or against a proposed $3.1 billion spending plan containing hundreds of millions for migrant shelter costs, according to the head of the MassGOP.In a statement calling on the state’s liberal majority to interrupt their December-long holiday and return to their posts, MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale says Democrats had plenty of time to pass a supplemental budget before they took the rest of the year off from formal meetings.“Democratic leadership on Beacon Hill is doing everything possible to avoid regular order. Leaders seem more concerned with bypassing debate and votes than allowing previously negotiated provisions to proceed without interruption. Included among these provisions already negotiated are important cost of living increases for state union workers. Instead, Democrats are once again choosing to try and push back room deals through a process that does not allow for accountability,” C...
